Video Premiere: Catching Salmon host a rowdy garage session in new video for ‘Pitted’

“This song is about remembering the good times growing up,” Catching Salmon said of their latest single, Pitted.

Catching Salmon have shared the new music video for their latest single, a melodic, bombastic punk tune titled Pitted.

The track — which you might’ve already caught on Happy’s Staff Picks earlier this month — brims with hard-hitting energy and nostalgia, with an overall feel reminiscent of a beachside jam session.

Carried by a surf rock riff, Pitted deploys sun-drenched licks while also dipping into the band’s punkish roots, with thunderous instrumentation and an electric guitar solo seemingly ripped straight from a heaving moshpit.

During its fuzzier moments, Pitted could form the playlist of a summertime road trip, helped along by a melodic vocal performance and airy refrains that flit between harmonic and something altogether grungier with finesse.

While all the markers of more melodic rock are there, Catching Salmon don’t shy away from their noisier tendencies, most notably through their teeth-baring instrumentation.

Here, clashing cymbals, thunderous drum sections and screechy guitars collide for a tune that can bang heads as easily as it can sooth them.

Walking this line proves fruitful for Pitted’s storytelling, since it recalls the sunburnt and riotous debauchery of a summer spent by the coast.

Here, Catching Salmon recall bygone beach days, ocean swims and the carefree camaraderie of a jam session. The energy of the latter activity is certainly felt all throughout the track, and forms the opening scenes of Pitted’s just-released music video.

Premiering on Happy Mag, the video combines DIY clips of the band in the midst of a particularly rowdy garage session, interspersed with snapshots of the bandmates enjoying afternoon beers, perching on grassy hills and devouring some pub grub.

The leisurely vibe aligns perfectly with Pitted’s lyricism, feeling both personal to the band and universal in its documenting of beachside memories.

Pitted stands as a testament to Catching Salmon’s infusion of heartfelt connections within otherwise-skull crushing riffs, and is about as close to a full-on nostalgia trip as you can get.
