During the recording of Blur’s experimental 1999 album ’13’, guitarist Graham Coxon found himself frozen mid-performance when an unexpected visitor appeared in the control room.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Coxon recalls locking eyes with Madonna, who had dropped by the London studio while working with the late producer William Orbit.
The moment left him in a comedic panic: “Do I stay here or do I get the courage to go and say hi?”
Coxon describes Orbit, who died in July at 69, as a “genius tinged by madness,” whose anarchic spirit shaped the album.
He remembers improvising over a beat Orbit created, which later resurfaced as Madonna’s Grammy-winning hit ‘Beautiful Stranger’.
Following Orbit’s death, Madonna paid tribute to the man who “made her career.”
Coxon, now working on new music, hints at potentially performing an Orbit-related Blur track at his upcoming solo shows.
