Athena Joy has burst onto the scene with her incredible new single Repeat and we pray that this is not the last we hear of her. With her debut EP out now, the past few months must have seemed like a whirlwind to the Coffs Harbour-based singer songwriter.
Her mature tone and effortless vocals are carried along perfectly through light handed, simply constructed electronic accompaniment.
Athena Joy is an exciting new addition to Australian music, joining a league of female voices already taking charge of the new sound for 2018.
Athena Joy’s music is a delightful compendium of stories. Interweaving classic rock influences with a contemporary thread, her understanding of her own sound is clear through the quiet confidence behind her voice.
Her sound has been compared to that of Lana Del Ray, Florence Welch and MS MR, a modern and soothing take on traditional soul with folk elements. The music of Athena Joy has a duality; it’s original yet bursting with recognisable undertones.
She was recently a finalist in the Queensland Music Awards, not to mention the regular praise she’s gleaned from the press. Her music has been called ethereal and haunting, and this latest record explores even more of Athena Joy’s songwriting and vocal capabilities. At just 22 years of age, there is surely plenty more to come and we are more than ok with it.
In celebration of the EP release, the record will be showcased at The Zoo in Brisbane where Athena Joy is currently living and recording. Set to kick off tomorrow, this is an event which will likely have crowds flocking from all over Fortitude Valley.
If you are still yearning to know exactly what Athena Joy is all about we suggest you get to the Zoo on the 15th of March and check her out. Find out all the details here.
