Sydney’s Empire of the Sun are a local band who have truly gone international. Their debut track Walking On A Dream is arguably still their biggest hit, a pop song so simple and effective the rest of the musical world wishes they thought of it first.
An album of the same title dropped in 2008, and five years later Ice On The Dune was released, a dance-oriented pop album that the duo toured around the world, including a packed-out set at Splendour‘s main stage in 2014.
Today, Empire of the Sun announces their third studio album Two Vines.
Theatrical Aussie duo Empire of the Sun have announced their next LP Two Vines, and it’s packed with some of the biggest collaborators on the market right now.
The record was co-produced by Peter Mayes (Sia, The Killers) and features musical contributions from bassist Tim Lefebvre and pianist Henry Hey (both musicians on Bowie‘s Blackstar), Wendy Melvoin (Prince‘s The Revolution) and Lindsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac).
Empire of the Sun is the partnership of The Sleepy Jackson‘s Luke Steele and Pnau‘s Nick Littlemore clad in goldy, multicoloured, space age attire. Their records, media and live shows all take on a next-level degree of theatrics within the theme of each album. It seems like Two Vines will see a return of this style. Littlemore, usually a mysterious character, says in their press release:
“There was an image we talked about very early on with this record, and that was this image of a modern city overtaken by jungle, almost like mother nature taking back the planet. All the buildings will turn back to sand. All it will be is nature again. We wanted to make something that reflected the beauty of that”
Empire of the Sun’s website already shows the fruits of this image, depicting Steele and Littlemore deep in a surreal jungle amidst strange, alien animals.
Two Vines will be available for pre-order tomorrow, and is set for release on October 28.
