Joey Daye Ascends the EDM Ranks with Explosive New Single ‘Hit List’: A Thrilling Shift into Drum ‘n’ Bass Territory

After two charting singles, one compilation appearance and radio play, Joey Daye levels up even further with his next EDM single, ‘Hit List’

Tracing an unlikely path to electronic music production after three years as an AFL player from 2009 to 2012, Queenslander Joey Daye is currently making a name for himself in the EDM scene. While having a lifelong passion for music, Daye started getting serious about recording and releasing his own electronic music in 2020.

In 2021, he released the single ‘Everything You Need’ while signed to Will Sparks’ Clubwrk Records. It proceeded to debut at #3 on the triple j Unearthed charts in March of that year, before remaining at #33. With the release of more singles came further recognition for Daye, leading to radio play through a new record deal, a compilation appearance, and more chart action.

Upon deciding to celebrate his strong connection to Indigenous heritage with his next single, ‘Yerra (Soar)’, Daye’s release of the track in January 2023 through Sorta Kinda Music led to the track peaking at #25 on the ARIA dance charts. It proceeded to remain at #28, one spot above a BLOND:ISH track that featured Madonna, and six spots above Daye’s idol Dom Dolla, (who charted with his remix of Gorillaz’ track ‘New Gold Feat. Tame Impala & Bootie Brown’).

Reflecting on the positive impact of ‘Yerra (Soar)’ (a word from the Ngunnawal nation of southern NSW/ACT), Daye describes it as “the first song I’ve ever made that gave me goosebumps when hearing it back for the first time”. An extended mix of the track also appeared on Sorta Kinda Music’s compilation Club Cactus Vol. 2, released in late April.

Though mainly occupying the realms of house and techno with these tracks, Daye is now preparing to reveal a new side of his creativity with upcoming single ‘Hit List’. Composed in the style of drum ’n’ bass, with a much faster BPM and influences from the ‘stutter house’ genre, ‘Hit List’ also features a prominent UK rap vocal. “The funky vocals build into a fast-paced ambient drop”, Daye explains, “with a taste of mixed emotions.”
