PREMIERE: Feeling stressed? Melbourne soul sisters Great Aunt bring the calm with My Last Dime

When done well, soul music is something not many can deny as a beautiful thing. Melbourne duo Great Aunt have proved that Australia is more than capable in delivering that glorious sound with their latest single, My Last Dime.

The track is a taste of what to expect from their highly anticipated upcoming EP and reflects the meticulous and overwhelming quality of their work thus far.

Drawing the best of both, soulful duo Great Aunt have crafted a song that reflects both their individuality and instrumental precision on My Last Dime.

The song itself is bursting with classic references and just enough rootsy grit to keep Great Aunt’s sound distinctly Australian.

The pair have an interesting musical background to their sound, with guitarist Megan Bird’s beginnings in hardcore and punk. Combined with jazz drummer Chelsea Allen, Great Aunt is living proof of the interconnected nature of music.

My Last Dime traverses feelings of fear in being forgotten and of rediscovering purpose in one’s existence. In speaking about the process behind writing the track Megan Bird explained “I finally felt like I’d found home in my life – in terms of what I was doing and who I was with – sadly, though, I realised that not everyone can say the same. My Last Dime is about finding purpose, feeling grateful, feeling at peace with your identity.”

While they may have clashing musical backgrounds, the vocal harmonies, seductive use of double bass and hypnotic synchronised claps and stomps tie their sounds so brilliantly together it is hard to believe that they haven’t been making music together forever.

Their self-titled EP is due out later this month and an upcoming tour across Victoria, Northern New South Wales and South-East Queensland will be showcasing the best they have to offer. For now My Last Dime is an exquisite and humbling track worthy of attention.
