PREMIERE: Melbourne’s electronic whizz kid Squarehead returns with a dreamy new EP Thought Fractals

Tobi Yamamoto is Squarehead, a hot hot electronic artist out of Melbourne and the latest EP he’s got for us is something pretty damn special.

The bass player turned multi instrumental sound wizard has been releasing steady stream of absolute dynamite since 2013. His newest EP Thought Fractals is filled with swelling psychedelic elements and threads of dubious funk.

With a subtle funk thread and Yamamoto’s bass background ringing through loud and clear, it’s damn obvious Squarehead aren’t messing around on Thought Fractals.

His debut record Fables saw Yamamoto go on to perform alongside the likes of ALTA, Andras Fox and Halcyon Drive, as well as lineups including Inca Roads, Castle Music Festival and Paradise Music Festival.

Having already released single Perties, we present to you now the record in its entirety.

Without vocals, Thought Fractals is an instrumental masterpiece in itself. Mixing the smooth sounds of blues and funk with glittering, spacey synth, the record is easy listening with a complexity that doesn’t leave anything to be desired. A beautifully produced and curated mix.

Although Squarehead is a one man production, the act is performed as a three piece when taking the stage and the set provides for a multi-faceted listening and viewing experience.

Combining live instrumentation with electronic samples, the live dynamic of Squarehead changes into something wholly more interactive and accessible.

Not wanting to lose sight of what is a seemingly intricate and personal creative process, Yamamoto produced the record himself, handing mastering over to Adam Dempsey at Deluxe Studios.

An impressive project of labour and love, Thought Fractals reveals Squarehead as a sharply tuned and important artist, capable to blending delicate sound into something rounded and whole without losing the unique vibrancy of his music.
