Super Magic Hats – More Than Words

Melbourne based producer Rob Masterton’s Super Magic Hats is a fresh and vibrant cast of electronic sampling and eclectically nostalgic composition. With a sound reminiscent of the likes of M83, Miike Snow and Two Door Cinema Club, it gives the impression of a rhythmically familiar, yet melodically pleasing summer soundtrack. This reminiscent flashback can be felt across that of Happy Jazz with its laid back, head twiddling melodies to Hangin with refined, driven bass and selectively chopped vocal samples.

Since emerging to the electronic music scene in 2011, these two tracks (to name a couple) have sent Masterton’s experimentally rich, pop clusters into sets of popularity in local and international airwaves. Furthermore, with the release of his debut self titled EP, Masterton launched into the completion of a very successful tour. In the present, with a tour and a little time to reflect on his travels Masterton has released a new single entitled More Than Words.

To be frank, it really is lovely.

Anyone who knows all too well the pains of public transport will find solace in Super Magic Hats’ new single.

Despite the notion of travelling that is the focus of the single, especially that of the video, the track holds its roots directly in Melbourne. It’s actually a true underdog story, as Masterton had the idea for this infectiously beat-driven, musical soundscape on a tram, whilst having difficulty trying to study (hello familiarity).

Now, whether Masterton realizes or not, in the process of creating this track, he may have just found the next best method of procrastination: being productive whilst being unproductive – it’s revolutionary. Regardless, back to More Than Words, it has been described by Masterton himself to have an 80’s (bear with me) “movie training montage feel” that inspires encouragement and at its peak, is like throwing your hands in the air on top of a mountain. How attractive that encouragement is – especially at 6am on a crowded tram.

The single More Than Words was released on April 1st and is available on their website or to stream on Soundcloud. You can check out their tour dates here.
