Louis Theroux somehow released one of TikTok’s most popular songs of 2022

TikTok has joined the chorus of platforms revealing their year-end analytics, yesterday unveiling its 2022 report on the app’s most popular songs and viral moments.

TikTok has released its analytics around the year’s buzziest songs on the video platform, sharing a top ten list that reflects the truly bizarre tastes of our collective For You Pages. While the platform has joined fellow giants like Spotify and YouTube in crunching 2022’s music data, TikTok is far less picky when it comes to the inclusion of non-musicians, and reveals promising numbers for rising artists not represented elsewhere.

Genres spanning from meme music to 80’s throwbacks, 2022’s most popular TikTok musician was Lizzo, who’s track About Damn Time helped her amass some 26 million followers this year. Selena Gomez, Bad Bunny, Doja Cat and Billie Eilish round out the list’s most famous cohort, while lesser-known artists Bella Poarch, Yung Gravy and Nessa Barrett represent TikTok’s rising stars.

Interestingly, only Lizzo featured on the platform’s separate list of most popular songs. That honour was bestowed upon an even more outlandish cohort of entrants, which somehow includes documentarian Louis Theroux. His meme song Jiggle Jiggle, which he debuted on the YouTube series Chicken Shop Date earlier this year, garnered 6.6 million uses on TikTok in 2022, placing eighth overall.

Given that TikTok has created its own music ecosystem in the years since its meteoric rise, it’s promising to see a swathe of songs by non-radio artists comprise the list. Willow, Pharrell Williams and Labrith are perhaps the starriest names within the top ten, achieving the feat for their songs Wait a Minute!, Just a Cloud Away and Forever, respectively. Meanwhile, Kate Bush has continued Running Up That Hill, as the 1985 track placed tenth overall.

Sunroof by Nicky Youre & dazy, L$d by Luclover and Ginseng Strip 2002 by Yung Lean took the first three spots. Scroll down for the complete list of 2022’s most popular TikTok songs and artists, and head here for a look at Spotify’s year-end analytics.
