Heavy metal wins 2018’s “most improved” award, growing faster than any other genre

A new report from music distribution company TuneCore has revealed that heavy metal popularity grew massively in 2018. In fact, it topped the most improved list with the most increased downloads and streams compared to 2017.

TuneCore is a distribution platform which helps independent artists and labels get their music across all the major platforms. From TuneCore’s 250,000 artists, their streams and downloads totalled 199.3 billion in 2018, an increase of 83% from 2017.

TuneCore have reported that heavy metal was the fastest growing music genre of 2018 with a 154% increase in downloads and streams.

According to TuneCore, heavy metal’s numbers increased by 154%, beating out J-Pop at 133%. In third place was R&B/Soul with a 68% increase. Other notable mentions include K-Pop with a 58% increase, world music at a 57% increase and instrumental with a 42% increase.

“In 2019 we’re seeing great momentum in helping our customers build sustainable careers by finding new income across formats and channels,” said TuneCore CEO Scott Ackerman.

Seems like everyone and their nan is getting into heavy metal. But we reckon that still, nobody beats this guy.
