‘The stakes are high’: Netflix drops trailer for royal exposé ‘Harry & Meghan’

Netflix has released the trailer for Harry & Meghan, the highly-anticipated documentary about the titular couple’s life.

The emotionally charged clip shows snippets of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the early stages of their relationship, as depicted by images of the couple in various loved-up positions. After an unseen interviewer asks “why did you want to make this documentary?” the trailer launches into a montage of black-and-white photographs of Meghan Markle crying, Harry consoling, and Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William, looking decidedly stern-faced.

That particular photo was taken at the Commonwealth Day service in the weeks after the Sussexes famously stepped back from royal duties, a period which the six-episode documentary will explore. Throughout the clip, Harry is overheard saying “no one sees what is happening behind closed doors,” and “I had to do everything I could to protect my family.

In an accompanying synopsis, Netflix described Harry & Meghan as a “never-before-seen look at one of the most discussed couples in history.” In addition to its exploration of the pair’s shock exit from the royal family in 2020, the documentary is said to cover Harry’s strained relationship with his relatives, and the explosive,tell-all interview the couple did with Oprah Winfrey last year.

Harry & Meghan will include interviews with friends of the ex-royals, as well as historians tracing the Crown’s relationship with the press. The trailer arrives at a particularly tenuous time for the royals, following the death of matriarch Queen Elizabeth in October. Since then, the Windsors have faced increasing public scrutiny, including an incident last month where the newly-ascended King Charles was egged during a public engagement (enjoy that below).

Elsewhere, the family has combated more rumours of institutional racism, after a Black royal courtier alleged that William’s godmother repeatedly questioned her ethnic origins. Following the accusation, Prince William released a statement describing the comments as “deeply regrettable” and “unacceptable”.
